Multicultural Upbringing

Identity development is a process we all go through. We are shaped by culture, family values, education, and environment in general. When we don’t have stable anchors in our surroundings that give us clues about who we are, we may take longer to fully develop our sense of identity and belonging. You may feel the complexity of your inner cultural world, formed by all the places you grew up in, is not fully understood by others around you. This sense of discomfort can also be present in those moving to a new country as they try to adapt to a new culture and way of living. Race, religion, ethics, gender, are hard topics to address, but also at the forefront of a multicultural experience. Talking to someone who personally understands these challenges can bring a sense of relief and the realization that you are not alone.
